Deck Concept:
With apologies to Adam Warlock and Star-Lord, Spider-Woman is still by far the best hero to use for Voltron decks. So, here's my take on the most versatile, Swiss Army Knife of a Voltron deck possible.
Here are the main ideas:
-
Do damage/thwart then chump block with whatever allies come up as you're setting up Team Training, Boot Camp, Mighty Avengers, Finesse, Combat Training, and Quincarrier. The one caveat is Adam Warlock. Get him out, and keep him alive.
-
Attack or thwart with Spider-Woman, and use an ally to defend while setting up. You've got 11 of them, and they can all be upgraded in some fashion. No need to rush the Voltron. Get the board right. Bring down that threat. Take away side schemes. Kill minions. With all the low-cost aspect cards in this deck, plus her incredible events, you'll be at 3/3/3 pretty much every turn. Add in Hand Cannon and Combat Training, and she's 3/6/3.
-
Once set up, choose your Voltron adventure. Will it be all Avengers? Will it be all Guardians? Will it be both? Will it be Guardians who become Avengers? All options are valid and ridiculously powerful. Let's go through each ally one by one. Starting with Avengers, then Guardians, then the odd ball.
Avengers:
-
Ant-Man and Wasp: I wouldn't use them until you get Team Training, Boot Camp and one of Finesse or Quincarrier out. Once you do, you'll be able to pay for them without using a card, and they'll have at least 2 health. Combined with Mighty Avengers, and that will be a 2 health ally that can hit for 4/5 or thwart for 2/3, then block for you at the end of the turn. Phenomenal value. We'll also call having Team Training, Boot Camp, Mighty Avengers and one of your resource generators out the name of Fully Avenged.
-
Blade: Like the two bugs above, I wouldn't try to Voltron Blade until you get Fully Avenged. Once you do, you've got 24 out of 50 cards with resources. So, his Fully Avenged output is 4 damage or 2 thwart per resource. Give him Inspired and it's 5 and 3.
-
Captain Marvel: We all know what to do with this ally, don't we? Fully Avenged she has 4 hit points, 4 attack, 3 thwart, and draws a card each time her power is used. She's worth an Inspired and a Reinforced Suit. If you want to switch out Sky Cycle for Laser Blaster, the card draw and output (5 attack/4 thwart) is worth it. Don't worry about healing her yet. We've got that covered later.
-
Sentry: As long as you're set up to handle the encounter card, Sentry is a beast. Fully Avenged he has 6 hit points, 5 attack and 3 thwart. That's enough hit/thwart, block and still be alive most rounds. Throw a Reinforced Suit on him, and he'll survive all but the biggest Ronan the Accuser hit.
-
She-Hulk: Oh, how I love this Voltron! Full Avenged, she sits at 8 damage, 2 thwart (do not do this!), and 5 hit points. Add an Inspired, and a Reinforced Suit, and she's up to 11 damage. Go crazy with an Enraged, and it's 13 damage. Throw in some Honorary Avenger and you can get from 14 to 16 depending on the rules you follow. We do have a way to heal her.
Guardians:
-
Angela: We'll now come up with a new term. Fully Guarded. Which means Team Training, Boot Camp, Laser Blasterand Energy Spear. So, Angela Fully Guarded is 4 health, 6 damage, and 0 thwart. With overkill and piercing. Enraged she gets 8 damage. Inspired it's up to 9. Give her an Honorary Avenger, and it could be up to 10 damage.
-
Bug: We all know how to Voltron this guy, right? Full Guarded he's at 3 health, 5 damage, and 1 thwart. Inspired and its 6 and 2. If you throw on an Honorary Avenger, that's 7 and 2. All we need to do is attack every round with Spider-Woman. I don't advise Enraged for him unless the villain is close to death.
-
Marvel Boy: Nothing all that special here. The ranged is nice. Fully Guarded, he's at 3 health, 6 damage and 0 thwart. He's expendable. So, use Enraged and Inspired at will.
-
Yondu: He's similar to Bug. No consequential damage from attacking. Fully Guarded, he's at 5 health, 5 damage and 2 thwart. He's worth an Honorary Avenger to get to 6 health and 6 damage. Add in an Enraged and Inspired, and he's at 9 damage while only taking 1 consequential damage.
Oddball Mystic Guy:
- Adam Warlock: So, why is this guy in a Voltron deck? It's all about that heal for 3 to an identity. Attach a Reinforced Suit, Honorary Avenger and switched out Sky Cycle, and with the right cards, you can heal for 6 in one round. While also doing 6 damage or thwarting for 4 with Inspired. Blade pairs well with Adam since he'll get rid of a pesky resource for you which should leave an somewhere. Is She-Hulk getting low on health? Heal her and get 3 more damage per round. Did Sentry survive a hit? Bring him back up to almost full. Heal Captain Marvel's card machine! Of course, heal Spider-Woman every time you need to.
Mass Attack:
-
The damage potential of this card is crazy. With The Triskelion, you can have Adam Warlock and three allies out.
-
The max for Avengers: She-Hulk (16) + Sentry (8) + Wasp (5) + Spider-Woman (4) = 33 damage.
-
The max for Guardians + Blaze of Glory: Angela (11) + Marvel Boy (11) + Yondu (7) = 29 damage
-
The max for Honorary Avengers +Blaze of Glory: Angela (12) + Marvel Boy (12) + Yondu (8) = 32 damage
Conclusion:
With all the versatility here, you won't be pigeon-holed into any one ally. Really, even if you don't have Adam Warlock, this deck will do major damage, and is a blast to play!
