A Big thwarting deck I've had on the table for a few weeks using Even the Odds. I didn't build it for The Winning Hand Podcast Episode 88 - "Even or Odd", but it seemed like a good time to post it!
Stretch Goals
Nothing too fancy here. This deck is meant to be used in Multiplayer for a few reasons.
- First, Even the Odds scales powerfully with player count... and once you're set up, you can effectively deal with pretty much ever side scheme.
- Second, this deck has very little offensive capability, and even benefits from some survivability help. When I put this deck on the table, I let others know that I can thwart big numbers, but with the intention of leaving them free to attend to other issues on the table (which I hope will include clearing minions, progressing the villain, and occasionally protecting me).
- Lastly, the benefit from the side schemes this deck brings also scale with the player count, so big thwart numbers = free supports and upgrades, and eventually boosted stats and card draw.
so lets get into the card of the week
Even The Odds
This card is one of my go-tos in multiplayer because it scales in effect (but not in cost) Here are some reasons it works well for Ms Marvel
- you can use Biokinetic Polymer Suit to reliably provide the required energy resource
- you can exhaust Ms Marvel to use her "Morphogenetics" ability to return it to your hand and maybe play it again
- you can abuse Shrink to make it thwart all side schemes for six instead of four. And six is greater than four.
- lastly, Bruno Carrelli can save it for later, and Aamir Khan can "Bottom Deck" it so that you are guaranteed to see it on the last draw of your deck (which is, in a way, more reliable than shuffling it into your deck).
Additional support for this card outside her kit includes:
- Overwatch is a no-brainer here. Since Even the Odds doesn't hit the main scheme, put Overwatch on a side scheme and remove threat from the main at the same time. I've even had turns when I had 2 copies in my hand, put them on 2 separate side schemes, and "reflected" Even the Odds to remove 12 threat off the main.
- Passion for Justice boosts Even the Odds by 1
- Three copies of Skilled Investigator for the table, to gift card draw (increasing the efficiency of your thwart support)
- Sense of Justice can help pay for thwart events, and reliably hits the kicker on Multitasking (which can target the main and can be Shrunk when you don't have Even the Odds.
- you may have noticed that I didn't include Strength and Genius. I played with them for a while, but swapped them out for 2x Passion for Justice because not being able to use them to play Even the Odds was a feel-bad. There are very few cards that Ms Marvel wants to play that require a double anyway.
Overstretched
Several Good cards that would have good synergy here, but not included to keep the card count low and reliability high, but make a great sideboard.
- additional side schemes like Generation X, Lay the Trap, and Going Undercover
- additional recursion with Vigilante Training
- reliable thwart boosting with Operative Skill
- more allies would increase survivability. Eros and Quake are good ones.
- Spider-Man is a powerful multiplayer card, but expensive
- if you're playing with a Leadership player, you might hand them a copy of Mission Leader. Don't forget to get it back from them!
And that's the deck. I've been playing around with it for a couple weeks now, and having a good time. I'll be taking it to Assemble! con in Connecticut later this month. Let me know if you have thoughts, ideas, or questions. This deck is named after a card from one of my other favorite tabletop games, Spirit Island.
Such a great combo! It’s really cool to see all of the thwart spread. Ms. Marvel is still super powerful in 2026!
