Magik is unique. She has both the X-Men and Mystic traits, opening up some incredibly powerful deck builds. This deck comes with the mystic package: The Sorcerer Supreme, Spiritual Meditation, and Summoning Spell, which have all proven to be incredibly powerful. This deck makes use of the consistency of the mystic cards, while also utilizing the powerful X-Men cards.
Magik plays with the top card of her deck faceup. When Magik changes form from alter-ego to hero you get to choose a spell from your discard pile and place it on top of your deck. On your hero side you can play the top card of the deck as if it was in your hand and reduce its cost by 1. This deck primarily focuses on knowing what card is on top of the deck and reducing its cost.
To combo with your hero ability I have included Uncanny X-Men. This will increase the hit points of your allies and reduce their cost further! For instance, Angel has a printed cost of 3, which is reduced by 1 because Magik has the X-Men trait, Magik's ability reduces his cost by 1 if he is on top of the deck, and Uncanny X-Men reduces the cost again, meaning that Angel is free and has an extra hit point! A 2 ATK 1THW 4 Health ally for 0 cost seems like a good deal to me! Here are the costs for the allies if you have Uncanny X-Men in play and it is on top of the deck:
Ally Costs With Uncanny X-Men and Top Deck
Obviously there will not always be an ally on top, but it will happen at least a few times throughout a game. Seeing the top card of your deck also enables ["To Me, My X-Men!"](/card/36020) to be much better. Since Magik's cost reduction ability is limited to once per phase you may also want to play ["To Me, My X-Men!"](/card/36020). This card is great if you know you'll find an ally. And luckily you'll be able to see if the top card of your deck is an ally and even which one! It's still good if the top card of your deck isn't an ally because of the abundant amount of allies I have included. Magik turns this often risky card into a safe one.
- Storm + Player Side Scheme = 25 THW
- If you have Storm in play and attach Danger Room Training, her stat line will be 3 ATK, 3 THW, and 5 hp. Each thwart will remove 3, then allow you to move an extra 2 from one scheme to another. If you have a player side scheme out you can use that as a threat sink. Each activation will remove 5 threat from a scheme, meaning that she can potentially thwart for 25! You won't need more than that for the majority of villains. That's great value for an ally that only costs you 2 to play. Keep in mind you would also have to get an upgrade and a player side scheme, bringing the total cost to 4. But still, I would play a 4 cost 25 THW card any day of the week!
- Gentle Does Up To 20 Damage
- If you use Gentle to attack, normally he would be a 3 cost ally that does 6 damage. Not bad, but now it's a lot better. With the extra 2 hp from Uncanny X-Men and Danger Room Training, he can now output 12 damage! The total cost is now 2 for 12 damage when attacking the villain. He doesn't take extra consequential damage when attacking minions though, so if you use him to clear minions he can output up to 20 damage!
Maximum Ally Outputs:
- Angel = 15 ATK / 10 THW
- Forge = 8 ATK / 8 THW
- Pixie = 6 ATK / 8 THW
- Mirage = 8 ATK / 12 THW
- Gentle = 20 ATK / 10 THW
- Storm = 15 ATK / 25 THW
- Beast = 15 ATK / 15 THW
- Havok = Variable ATK / Variable THW
Card Substitutions
- Professor X - I didn't include him because of thematics only. In the campaign, he is dead, so I thought it would ruin the immersion. He is a powerful and strong ally to add though!
- Call For Backup - Mostly I was just trying to keep the list to 40 cards because people like that. Feel free to add any player side scheme because they're useful and work well with Storm.
- Avengers MansionThis is another great addition to the deck. Card draw with Magik is extra valuable because it also gives you a second shot at seeing a card you need.
- Cosmo - The lack of X-Men trait ruins the Uncanny X-Men cost reduction. Maybe worth using Honorary X-Men
I forgot to add danger room to this deck. Definitely add it!
