I. Summary and Theme

This deck was meant to be viable for Thor [Aggression] playing solo, particularly against a villain with many minions (which Thor excels against due to his "Have at thee!" printed hero ability).

II. Mulligan and Building the "Engine"

Thor's poor hand-size is his biggest weakness; you need to play Asgard just to reach an average hand size. Therefore, getting the supports and upgrades that generate resources and increase card draw is high priority.

  • As mentioned, [Asgard](/card/06007) allows Thor to add +1 to his hand size. This is the highest priority. If you draw [For Asgard!](/card/06004), use it to find [Asgard](/card/06007).
  • [Quincarrier](/card/08023) generates a wild resource.
  • [Team-Building Exercise](/card/12024) reduces the cost of a shared trait card, which includes all allies, [Asgard](/card/06007), [Hall of Heroes](/card/06017), [Quincarrier](/card/08023), [God of Thunder](/card/06008), [Mjolnir](/card/06009), and [Thor's Helmet](/card/06010).
  • [Deft Focus](/card/16024) will decrease cost for events with the superpower trait: [Hammer Throw](/card/06005), [Lightning Strike](/card/06006), and [Limitless Stamina](/card/31023).
  • [God of Thunder](/card/06008) (of which there are two), generates an energy resource.
  • Although it is an event (not support or upgrade), ["Bring It!"](/card/19030) allows Thor to draw additional cards for each minion that he is engaged with.

III. Allies

Thor's allies are a combination of Asgardians and Avengers so that he can pay for them using Team-Building Exercise. All allies are fairly low cost; aside from Lady Sif, no ally cost more than 2 resources:

  • [Angela](/card/18011) is "free," costing a minion. She should only be played if Thor's printed hero ability ("Have at thee!") hasn't been used during the herp phase, so that Thor can draw 2 cards.
  • [Hulk](/card/01050) is a great "chump blocker" that usually lasts two rounds due to his 5 health.
  • [Lady Sif](/card/06002) is best played after Thor takes a basic action, since Thor readies when she enters play.
  • [Spider-Girl](/card/04040) neutralizes a minion by stunning and confusing them.
  • [Throg](/card/25014) is best played when there is at least one minion engaged with Thor. He is a great "chump blocker," since he will likely enter with a tough status card.
  • [Wasp](/card/13012)'s cost and health are determined by energy resources, which shouldn't be an issue since energy resources are abundant in this deck. Energy resources can also be generated by [Quincarrier](/card/08023) and the two [God of Thunder](/card/06008) cards in Thor's hero cards.

IV. Thwart Strategy

Thor's basic THW ability is only 1, so he will need some serious help to not allow the villain to win via scheming.

  • If a low-health minion is in play (either because the minion has naturally low health or because the minion has been attacked), use [Into the Fray](/card/13013). The damage overflow reduces threat from the main scheme.
  • [Smash the Problem](/card/25019) can be used for any scheme, not just the main scheme. Assuming Thor has [Mjolnir](/card/06009), he will exhaust and remove 3 threat.
  • [Defender of the Nine Realms](/card/06003) also allows for 3 threat removal, and is not bound to the main scheme only.
  • You may have to rely on allies for thwarting, although most allies have weak thwart.

V. Attack/Damage Strategy

Thor's attack/damage strategy is not complex, but can still lead to some fun combos.

  • [Limitless Stamina](/card/31023) allows Thor to ready, then use a basic ability such as ATK. This can be helpful to attack multiple times in one phase, or to defend during the villain phase, ready, then attack again.
  • There are 3 copies of [Hammer Throw](/card/06005) in Thor's deck. If an enemy has low health, this will do decent damage to the villain.
  • If [Deft Focus](/card/16024) and both copies of [God of Thunder](/card/06008) are in play/ready, you can play [Lightning Strike](/card/06006) with 2 damage for free.

VI. From Solo --> Multiplayer

This deck was largely created for solo play. However, if you are playing in multiplayer, and the hero team possesses a lot of thwarting power, consider trading out Into the Fray and/or Smash the Problem for any of the following:

  • [Pitchback](/card/28012) (cost 1) - since Thor has the aerial trait with [Mjolnir](/card/06009).
  • [Melee](/card/05030) (cost 3) - for taking out multiple minions.
  • [Drop Kick](/card/10014) (cost 3) - to damage and stun the villain.

Additionally, if you are playing multiplayer, consider taking up to three copies of Get Over Here! to take minions from other players (I add these for a 43-card deck). They cost nothing, do 1 damage, and activate Thor's "Have at thee!" printed hero ability.

Team-Building Exercise is a hero action, so you can't use it in alter-ego mode. :)
