Energy Barrier helps Iron Man with tech upgrades & heavy for Nova and Repulsor Blast for major damage!
-
UPDATED (2.0): Emergency x3 replaces Down Time x1 & Enhanced Reflexes x2
-
(See other decks/guides at the bottom of this page...)
Overview
Energy Barrier
- Energy Barrier is a tech upgrade for Iron Man's card draw, currently the only one in the game. This allows you to flip and stay on Iron Man identity earlier in the game.
- Ideally, you want to draw these with The Power of Protection and get them on the table so that you can get that card draw and also protect yourself while you build your suit.
Nova
- Nova is the other key card and once you get him on the table, you'll just keep him there and use his ability with the 22 (23 with new version) in the deck as well as Enhanced Reflexes.
- He is one of the most powerful cards/allies in the game in my opinion and can just shred through minions with the added benefit of his ability being "initiated" so that you can often kill an attacker before you are dealt damage.
Repulsor Blast
- Once you get the suit built and upgrades that stay on the table you'll find you'll draw almost entirely for Repulsor Blast because the cards that stay in your deck are energy. Usually you'll be blasting for at least 9 damage, often 11 or even 13 (with Energy).
- Repulsor Blast can also be a very good early, because you have not yet pulled out a lot of the cards that would stay on your board like Powered Gauntlets, Energy Barriers or Med Teams.
Game Strategy:
Mulligan
- Resource Cards, as usual
- Arc Reactor (his best suit card by far)
- Stark Tower
- Pepper Potts
- Mark V Helmet if you anticipate needing thwart
- Black Widow or Energy Barrier if you have drawn The Power of Protection
Building Your Suit
- Iron Man is pretty straight forward, first build his suit and then deal massive amounts of damage while going Aerial later in the game. The only tricky thing is knowing when to bite the bullet sometimes and flipping even if it costs you some low card draw in the beginning of the game.
- The order in which to build your suit when you're faced with choice can also vary. But in general get those low cost ones down, just so you can get your number of Tech Upgrades to get better card draw on Iron Man side.
- You could also only play one Rocket Boots rather than both to be able to recur the other for Aerial with Stark Tower, if you like.
Aerial
- Enhanced Awareness is to pay for Aerial if you don't want to use one Rocket Boots & recur it with Stark Tower every turn. This can also pay for Black Widow ability.
Defending
- I don't use Armored Vest because Iron Man is a pretty inefficient defender at 1 DEF although Arc Reactor helps to refresh if you wanted to add Expert Defense (or in the future, spoiler alert: a certain defense card in Dr. Strange's Hero Pack!).
- Either way, you'll make use of his massive HPs with Endurance, Rocket Boots, & Mark V Armor and then heal/defend with Med Team, Energy Barrier, & Preemptive Strike.
- These last 3 cards you want to constantly be using and cycling through and paying for Nova so they go back into your deck and you draw them for Repulsor Blast.
Early Game / Late Game
- Again, early you're probably just trying to survive and thwart and relying on Energy Barrier & Repulsor Blast for defense/damage.
- Late game you'll be able to start using Aerial, but it's certainly not a priority, as it's not really a great ability for the setup and the resource you have to spend. Its best use might really be when you have a Supersonic Punch.
- Also, later game you'll start to get some Med Team down so you can heal allies or yourself back up to full without using REC.
Stunned
- If you get stunned, remember to just use Powered Gauntlets which is an Attack rather than exhausting your hero.
Individual Card Strategy:
- Always try to take advantage of the Tough card and defend first before attacking.
- Nova will stay on the board, I wouldn't ever chump block with him, his ability is just too good. You have a ton of so you'll never not be able to use it & then x1 Enhanced Reflex so you don't have to use a card from your hand if you don't want to.
- Getting this early will make a huge difference, it essentially gives you an extra resource while you're trying to build your suit. Late game, use the second Rocket Boots to recur if needed for Aerial because they are .
- Make sure you are cognizant of which card is on top of your discard and when you are about to have to reshuffle. You always want to use her with the double resource cards or to get for Aerial.
- Very situational, especially in solo games. I hardly ever play him, would always rather see the other 4-cost allies, but may be better in multiplayer games.
- If you are going to use his ability, wait until he has only 1 health left so you can be the most efficient with it. This is a legal play. (Thanks Hall of Heroes, I recommend the site! Hall of Heroes, Unofficial FAQ)
Other Card Considerations:
- I've made some changes for 2.0, listed at the top of page.
- You could probably replace a Med Team or two if you wanted, but that would hurt Repulsor Blast and Nova.
- Nick Fury is an option which could give you a good burst in the beginning of the game when you need it.
- The Green cards in future hero packs are good, but only one is Energy.
- Could always drop an Emergency for a First Aid or other card of your choice.
Any feedback or play-through results are appreciated, thanks!

But to respond to your specific problems with Klaw. I agree, Klaw is tough because he himself schemes for a lot and then the whole suite can bring out some tough minions pretty quickly. I just played a game with the 2.0 version of this deck to test for you and won. But I also got a good opening draw: Arc Reactor, Mark V Helmet, & Repulsor Blast. I would keep anything on mulligan that is going to help you with scheme be it those cards or Black Widow. For this deck, we're kind of waiting for lower cost minions to really help us with that threat early that haven't come out yet, as it is, BW is our best bet because War Machine is really no help at all. I actually flipped first turn just because you have to get rid of those two side schemes or you lose, and then I played the Repulsor Blast and one-shotted Whirlwind. Repulsor Blast is pretty good early, you haven't pulled out all the Energy Barriers and Med Teams -- don't be afraid to use it, It's your best bet vs those early tough minions. From there I like to try and get Enhanced Barriers down to protect and kill minions that are coming out and I'll toss stuff I won't use til later even if it's his suit, like Powered Gauntlets or Rocket Boots if I absolutely have to. The updated deck gets rid of Down Time & x2 Enhanced Reflexes for x3 Emergency. See how that helps you vs Klaw Expert. Thanks for the feedback and your playthrough! :) |
Feb 22, 2020P.S. You may even want to experiment with Nick Fury in the deck for the early thwart. If so, replace x1 Emergency with him. He's a so at least he can help you with Aerial. I hate that he would stay in your deck and work against your Repulsor Blasts, but might be a sacrifice you have to make. |
Feb 22, 2020I tried the addition of x3 emergency as recommended and Nicky fury by removing a Med Team. Found this worked much better with some wins against Klaw and Ultron expert. |

Feb 24, 2020Great Job, the version 2.0 is fantastic! Thank you! I state that I have not tested yet, but also insert 1 Counter-Punch instead of 1 Preemptive Strike or Black Widow? |
Feb 25, 2020
As for your question, I think you're asking about adding a Counter-Punch in place of something? Hmm, I'm not sure I see the benefit of that. You really don't have to defend with Iron Man, his DEF isn't great and his ATK wouldn't give you a great counter punch. Or did I misunderstand your question? |
Feb 29, 2020When you list Mulligan cards, do you mean discard any card that’s not those cards? Thanks |

Apr 27, 2020Is Endurance really necessary given that you get+8 hp from armor? Is there something else that could replace it? |

May 17, 2020I love the deck! I play with less emphasis on Nova, but Energy Barrier is amazing for Iron Man - I love the flexibility and consistency it gives to building Iron Man’s hand size. Looking forward to hopefully getting a Tech in the other aspects some day. I drop all three Preemptive Strikes and all four Enhanceds and instead I’ve got two Emergency, two Armored Vest, and three Honorary Avenger. I haven’t yet played Armored Vest, but I consistently use it to go aerial and gain another 6 damage and 1 threat removal on a turn where I use Supersonic Punch. Honorary Avenger combos with Med Team and Black Widow to keep her on the table and able to use her ability. |
Jun 12, 2020Have you tried using Defensive Stance yet? I just got BW and built Thor Protection to see how it would go against standard Rhino. Lost one and won one. I think Iron Man will work much better as protection than Thor, but I wanted the challenge of trying something other than Thor Justice. |

Great minds think alike, in my 2.0 version I did drop some Enhanced for Emergency. Honorary Avenger is one of the best cards in the game, and for your version that relies less on for Nova and Repulsor Blast, it's a good idea. I haven't played this deck in a little while, but getting consistent big damage from Repulsor Blast with was really important early when Iron Man is weakest. However, you're right, I do love the Honorary Avenger & Black Widow combo and when I come back to this deck to revise it, I'll probably include it. Thanks for the comment and thoughts on some good revisions. :) |

Sep 24, 2020And I just realized that Electrostatic Armor combos nicely with Desperate Defense - also an Energy resource |
Jan 19, 2021Great deck! Took me a couple of games to figure out the dynamic of it, but I finally beat Rhino on Expert with it. |
Feb 10, 2021Played this deck yesterday against Wrecking Crew. Had massive problems going aerial cause of missing mental ressources... Couldnt use helmet and dmg bonus of gauntlets... |
Sep 12, 2021I have a similar Ironman protection deck, but utilizing Dauntless and Electrostatic armor with some of the newer green cards (Side Step and Nerves of Steel) to get the most out of retaliate. Successful against expert Risky Business and Ultron. |
Dec 05, 2021I did something similar with Ironman long time ago, you have better cards to add for sure. This deck have less sinergies and it feels less thematic. Will post that older deck soon. |

However, if you feel there are great cards to replace/update on 2024 protection cards, please let me know. I want to love this hero and work to do that |
I had 5/6 solo plays of this deck this evening. I found Rhino expert quite easy to deal with. However when trying against Klaw he destroyed me every time. If you are not able to build enough of the suit in the first hand then you are restricted to staying in alter ego early game. Twice Klaw blitzed the first stage and I was never able to get on top of the Masters of evil. There just didnt seem to be enough damage capability in the early game to fend off minions,
