How I Met Your Mother

"Kids, I'm going to tell you an incredible story..."

This video (March 14th) tells the incredible story of rescuing a CAPTIVE (is that how I met your mother???)

As I did with my Nick Fury Deck (Ezekiel 25:17) I borrow from two I.P.s which share a common actor - Cobie Smulders in this case who played Maria Hill in the MCU and Robin Scherbatsky in How I Met Your Mother.

Allies and Justice

Like Star-Lord, Maria makes all allies you play the same trait as her (obviously S.H.I.E.L.D. in this case), but I'm running almost all S.H.I.E.L.D. allies anyway. The only one who isn't is Ironheart, but I feel like that would be very different in any other aspect.

So why Justice then? Because of Global Logistics and Homeland Intervention! Threat should very rarely be a problem, and I'll get loads of free damage with Sky-Destroyer since I have six 0-cost S.H.I.E.L.D. events on top of all of my other S.H.I.E.L.D.-traited cards!

Turn 1

Unless I'm overflowing with resources or have NOTHING else I want in my opening hand, Maria's Alter-Ego Action will tutor Sky-Destroyer on turn one, then I'll see where I go from there!

No Chance Encounter?

Chance Encounter is one of my favorite Justice cards, but I prefer to run it when I have Side Scheme of my own to thwart so I'm not relying on villain Side Schemes.

I'd also like to run One Way or Another and Turn the Tide, but I'm focusing on S.H.I.E.L.D. to hopefully ensure Sky-Destroyer damage every turn (25 of 45 cards are S.H.I.E.L.D.), and always have S.H.I.E.L.D. cards available to exhaust for Global Logistics and Homeland Intervention

Out of Aspect

I wanted my out of aspect supports to be cheap(ish), so I went with the following:

Llllet's gets ready to Rumbllllllle"

Maria's Alter-Ego Action requires you to exhaust, so having a Ready to Rumble in play lets you ready when you flip up to Hero form!

The Triskelion is a neat inclusion to avoid bloat. I somehow forgot about that card, but it's a Unique SHIELD Support, so max is 1.

@THE_NickFury yep, It was definitely a "bloat" decision because I didn't want three copies of Med Team or Tac Team lol

Nice deck that changes her up from trying to get a ship out on turn one to using Sky Destroyer to deal 2 damage almost every turn.

@phtephen getting a big ship out first turn is fun too. That's exactly what the earliest drafts of this deck did, but I decided to go Sky-Destroyer-heavy late in testing. Both are viable (and fun) for her :)

How helpful have you found the Ready to Rumbles? I’m just thinking I’m not sure why I need her ready when her basic activations don’t seem important (though there are so many encounter cards that require a hero exhaust). Just want to hear your thinking before I include or exclude them!

@KingOfRohan Ready to Rumble isn't 100% necessary, but there are so many side schemes that can be a pain that I hate not being able to THW 2 after I flip up to Hero, and even if I didn't (or wasn't able to) use my alter Action, as you say, there are many encounter cards which require an Alter-Ego exhaust to clear.

Ready to Rumble is also Caught Off Guard protection. Front Organization can be too, and can protect your big carriers from something that forces you to discard the support with the highest cost (or similar), so if you don't want the ready but do want the protection, Front Organization is cheaper!

@SoloMarvelChampion Well, it helps for cards requiring identity / Hero exhausts, but it’s not providing you any extra Alter-Ego exhausts (except insofar as you needed to exhaust in Alter-Ego and truly needed her 2 thwart, which maybe she needs but I’m curious since the deck seems to have plenty of threat removal…). I do like the Caught Off Guard protection though the classic Skilled Investigator is also always a good choice. Hmm. I’m trying without them for a game, I’ll let you know if I miss them!

Is there a reason why everyone is running extra cards for her deck? The biggest decks seem they're around 45 cards.

Mar 10, 2025 SoloMarvelChampion · 3036

@phtephen I can't speak for anyone else, but I've been running most decks between 42 and 45 lately. There are only a couple heroes I try really hard to keep at 40.

Interesting. After playing Magic and deck building games for so long, it's really hard for me to go over the minimum deck size. Although in Champions, you see so many cards, it probably doesn't matter as much.

@phtephen exactly! I've never built a magic deck over 60 (well, Commander LOL), but I personally don't think you need to stick strictly to 40 cards in Marvel Champions. It only makes your deck a TINY bit more efficient imo
