I've always wanted to build a deck that tries to make the most use out of Magik's "once per phase" hero ability. The idea here is to be able to play Magic Barrier as often as possible during the villain phase by setting up the following sequence:
- End your turn in alter-ego form with Ready for a Fight in play and a Magic Barrier in the discard pile.
- If you have Limbo out, swap a or card to the top of your deck using the response when the villain phase starts.
- When the villain activates, use Ready for a Fight to flip to hero form, and use Magik's alter-ego ability to put Magic Barrier on top of your deck.
- You can now play the Magic Barrier for free off the top of the deck using Magik's hero ability when the villain attacks, and you'll be guaranteed the 3 damage if you used Limbo beforehand. Even without Limbo, the deck is mostly made up of and cards so your chances of hitting the damage are good anyway.
While this isn't an overtly powerful combo, it is "free" from a resource perspective and gives you a lot of control over the villain's actions and damage output. The list functions as more of a control deck where you build out and chip away at the villain while tanking their hits. The rest of the deck supports the control strategy:
Basic Spell is there for flexibility and takes care of whatever enemy/threat/healing you need in the moment.
Spiritual Meditation is great for filtering through your deck and resetting the top card of your deck if needed.
Dr. Sinclair can heal you up since you'll be taking some damage from larger attacks, and you'll be flipping down to alter-ego fairly regularly.
Excelsior provides extra damage when you defend with Magic Barrier, so you can get up to 5 damage per villain phase.
Legion has obvious synergy with Magik's hero ability, and can stay in play permanently if you really want.
Gambit isn't exactly on-theme, but is always just a really solid ally.
An incidental perk of the deck is that a lot of the damage is not classified as attack, so you can get around things like guard when going for the kill. Even with the control theme, the deck is still easily capable of 10+ damage in a turn to close out the game once you've whittled the villain down with the defense cards.
What's with the resource cards/no basic doubles/triple X-Gene??
Magik has a lot of requirements for having specific resource symbols on top of the deck to get bonus effects. This deck also runs Ready for a Fight, Dr. Sinclair, and Excelsior which require specific resources to use. I wanted to maximize the number of resources in the deck to make all those costs easier to meet. The deck has a lot of ways to filter through cards (Spiritual Meditation, Scrying, Avengers Mansion) so you can generally avoid awkward hands with too many weird resource cards. The overall curve is fairly low, so the basic doubles really aren't needed and I find the resources to be better for the deck as a whole.
Why no Moira MacTaggert if you're constantly flipping up and down?
Moira MacTaggert is actually really awkward for this deck because of timing rules. Since she is a response and Magik's alter-ego ability is an interrupt, when you flip up to hero form you will put Magic Barrier on top of your deck first with Magik's ability, then draw it with Moira MacTaggert. This defeats the whole purpose of the interaction with Ready for a Fight and actually costs you resources.
