Hi welcome to the twenty first in a series of decks I plan to build directly influenced by the amazing Get Up and Game! Perfect Match-Up series found here: https://youtu.be/1I2q3sT6FoA Please check out the channel and the video since I thought it was an amazing gift to the community and it inspired me to start playing Champions more regularly.
My goal with this series is to create a unique deck inspired by each challenge match-up in the video using all the suggested cards plus some of my own to create a deck that any player can use to check out the challenge. If you’re missing some cards from a deck please ask in the comments and I’ll do my best to find replacements from your collection so that you can have fun too! Hopefully I can build a deck that can beat the villain on both standard and expert. I’ll try to document any tweaks I made while playing the deck too.
This next match up was definitely tough as the ever readying Quicksilver gets matched up against the ever healing Sabretooth! The goal with this deck is to take time to set up Quicksilver and take advantage of his ready ability to make sure we can defend each and every turn of the game to protect the senator and then once we are set up, to make sure we take down an entire phase of the villain in a single turn to prevent Sabretooth healing all the progress we made.
There are two huge snags you have to look out for while playing this scenario:
The first is the Mystique encounter set. Her cards can shuffle into your deck and if Robert Kelly is your only ally, they will end the game! For this reason I have a couple cheap allies (Vivian, Ironheart and Victor Mancha) who's primary purpose is to stay on the table as bait. If one of Mystique's cards is in your deck, having one of these allies out should be your first priority OR if you're nearing the end of your deck since you will have even less time to prepare yourself. Mystique herself is also just an awfully powerful minion. I pulled her in my standard game and I think it added two additional turns to my game because I had to deal with her.
The second is Quicksilver's Nemesis set. Not only will this immediately cause incite 3, it will also add incite cards into the deck which means you really need to keep the threat down on 2B or risk an auto-loss when Shadow of the Past comes out! The earthquake treacheries are also a big deal, crushing your hand size and your readying ability. With that being said, I did beat both my Standard game and back to back Expert games but biding your time is important and they were all very close games. In my Standard game I dealt with an early Mystique, in my first Expert game I dealt with a late game Shadow of the Past that almost ended me and in my second Expert game I suffered an early Shadow of the Past and a late game Mystique. I think its important to always be prepared for these two possibilities even if its tempting to bring Sabretooth to an inch of his life, you may want to make sure you can finish him off or else it'll be better to keep the board state in check and take your time. It can also be helpful to hoard Repurpose, Maximum Velocity and Always Be Running in the late game for some big turns. Just make sure you have an ally ready to remove tough between Sabretooth phases or you can waste big damage potential.
The deck is fairly simply. Use your first deck pass to get as many upgrades out as you can including Armored Vest, Electrostatic Armor, Hyper Perception, Reinforced Sinew, Accelerated Reflex, Friction Resistance, Unflappable and Energy Barrier. Friction Resistance is most important as it will help you pay for your defensive events including Side Step, Never Back Down, Preemptive Strike and Jump Flip as well as your copies of Always Be Running.
An ideal late game turn will consist of some combination of Maximum Velocity, Always Be Running and Repurpose. If you have a tech or two down and a couple of repurpose, you can put in some SERIOUS damage to the villain. I had a lot of fun with this match up even if the constant threat of an auto-loss and the unpredictable healing of Sabretooth definitely ramps the stress level. You may wish to let Kelly take some damage while you set up since he will be taking very little damage once you get going. Good luck!
