In a couple weeks, I'll be going to my first ever Con of Heroes. If you'll indulge me, I'd like to tell a little story about why I'm bringing this deck to COH26.
I first got MC in June 2020 when I was looking for something I could play solo, but also play with my kids if they liked it. I had no experience with LCGs of any kind. My son gave it a couple tries, but it wasn't his cup of tea. My teenage daughter however, said the game was really cool. She was a fan of the Marvel movies and that was definitely a selling point.
With limited time and budget, I paced myself when it came to adding new hero packs. For Christmas 2020, I got Thor and Ms. Marvel. My daughter wanted to play Thor. She had bounced around between various heroes (Dr. Strange and Black Panther probably her top choices until this point) and clearly favored the aggression aspect. After Thor, she hardly played any other heroes. Thor was her favorite and it wasn't close. She liked him so much, she was inspired to build her own Thor deck - this deck. "He's just built different" was a common saying of hers at the time.
Then my daughter graduated from high school a few years ago and moved out and I lost my only MC gaming partner. She was a good sport and would play a game with me when she came home to visit. I always kept her Thor deck intact so it was ready when she returned. I have switched out a handful of cards here and there as my card pool expanded but the spirit is the same. Her approach was: boost Thor's HP with his Thor's Helmet and Endurance, don't flip down until you have to, and attack as much as possible. Tigra is nearly a must-play, and if you manage to Chase Them Down, you have to shout it out loud. She often called me out for not doing nearly as much damage as she was doing.
A few weeks ago I told her I would be going to this gathering in Minneapolis to play Champions all weekend. She was so excited for me. She said "Promise me you'll take my Thor deck and play it for me." Of course I will. I miss my MC buddy. Crap. I'm tearing up just typing this. Being a sappy dad is the worst.
Anyway, I saw others posting decks for the Con and felt like sharing my excitement. I'm looking forward to meeting new people and playing new scenarios and seeing new (to me) heroes in action. Safe travels everyone!
Very neat story! This will be my first Con of Heroes as well. I'll keep my ear out for someone shouting out Chase Them Down!
