This deck is inspired by teamcanadahockey2002's famous Gammamagik: https://marvelcdb.com/decklist/view/37125
This variation seeks to improve our flexibility and consistency. We are running extra targets for Attack Training that don't depend on Honorary X-Men. We also have more mechanisms for rerolling the top card of our deck so we can almost always get a fist on top when we need it. The extra deck manipulation allows us to dig through our deck faster to find our key combo pieces.
This deck has extremely high damage, below average thwarting, and average survivability.
Notes
The goal of this deck is to output enormous amounts of damage by leveraging Magik's built-in economy and some spicy combos with her hero ability.
- Mulligan aggressively for at least one ally. Hulk, Legion, Cosmo, and Wolverine are our priorities (in that order).
- Our other mulligan priorities are Limbo, Soulsword, Attack Training, Sorcerer Supreme, and other upgrades.
- The game plan is to buff Hulk with Honorary X-Men, Attack Training, and Sidearm. Then use our deck manipulation cards to put a fist resource on top of the deck so Hulk can attack for 5+2=7 damage for 8 activations. That's a total output of 56 damage for a total cost of 3+1+2+2=8 ER, which is a rate of 7 damage per ER. And that's not even counting Game Time, which allows us to extend this combo while maintaining the same 7-for-1 rate.
- If we don't find Hulk, or he's already buffed, just make some additional mini-Voltrons.
- Cosmo is a good Voltron target since he can always avoid consequential damage. He also allows us to reroll the top of the deck.
- Legion is also a good Voltron target because he can heal himself every other turn to stay perpetually alive.
- Legion, Goldballs, Cosmo, Spiritual Meditation, Scrying, and Limbo allow us to manipulate the top of our deck so we can hit the fist resources we need for Hulk's attacks, Legion's healing, Soul Strike's stun, and Soulsword.
- When using Goldballs in the early game, don't discard more cards than necessary to get the job done. We don't want to accidentally mill past important cards like Hulk. Once we're fully set up, Goldballs can go all out.
- My preferred use for Limbo is putting Magic Barrier on top of the deck at the start of the villain phase. This allows us to milk extra value out of our hero ability (effectively two more free resources) and is our primary means of defense.
Key changes
- Removed 3x Enraged. It is only worthwhile on Cosmo because he specifically dodges the extra consequential damage. On every other ally it is a minor tempo gain for a huge value loss. You could keep one copy for Cosmo.
- Removed Blade, Ironheart, Mockingbird, and Triage because they aren't good Voltron targets.
- Added Goldballs and Legion. Both can manipulate the top of our deck and use Attack Training without Honorary X-Men.
- Added 2x Basic Spell for general versatility.
- Added 2x Spiritual Meditation. Although we hate the mental resource, it helps us find our combo pieces faster.
- Added Wolverine and Spider-Woman because they are strong allies with fist resources. (Spider-Woman pairs very well with a Web Warrior at the table.)
- Added Combat Training so we can boost our basic attacks a bit more, plus it has a fist resource.
- Added X-Gene because we have many high quality targets for it.
- Added Strength because we're basically only unhappy to see it if it happens to be the top of our deck, and that's quite rare.
Special mentions
- Rictor is another good option for this deck; he can cycle the top card to help find what we need. However, keep in mind that he's not a native X-Men.
- Moira MacTaggert is a worthy consideration if we plan to flip to alter ego often. Magik does like to flip, but it depends on the scenario.
- When altering this deck, be mindful of the resource ratios. We want as many first resources as possible to ensure Hulk can attack and Legion can heal. We also benefit from a healthy amount of energy resources so Legion can do extra damage and Magic Barrier occasionally gets lucky. We don't want mental or wild resources because those shut down Hulk.
