Hi welcome to the thirty first in a series of decks I plan to build directly influenced by the amazing Get Up and Game! Perfect Match-Up series found here: https://youtu.be/1I2q3sT6FoA Please check out the channel and the video since I thought it was an amazing gift to the community and it inspired me to start playing Champions more regularly.
My goal with this series is to create a unique deck inspired by each challenge match-up in the video using all the suggested cards plus some of my own to create a deck that any player can use to check out the challenge. If you’re missing some cards from a deck please ask in the comments and I’ll do my best to find replacements from your collection so that you can have fun too! Hopefully I can build a deck that can beat the villain on both standard and expert. I’ll try to document any tweaks I made while playing the deck too.
I was definitely dreading our next match up. As anyone who's ever played against Collector 1 in solo, you know that games can end extremely quickly. There is a lot of skill in playing against him but there's also a lot of luck. You can only control so much when at most you can only remove one card from the collection each round and it only takes 5 cards to lose. Gamora is definitely a good choice in that she can rely on events and try to avoid allies and upgrades that will flood the collection. Unfortunately I forgot just how often cards get forced into the collection anyway. To give you an idea of how tough this can be, I lost 3 games on Standard before securing my first win! I finally got a wine by swapping out two copies of Clear the Area I had in the deck for two copies of Powerful Punch. This slight change added the extra offense I needed to push through. I then lost 3 games on Expert with one of them ending while I had the Collector with only 1 hit point remaining! Finally I secured my first Expert win! I had one more loss before I secured my second Expert win and could finally put this behind me.
The deck is pretty simple: use Gamora's various events to keep threat down on the main scheme and take down the Collector. My Standard losses were due to me trying to play a rush down style. I thought I could just attack hard and fast to finish off the Collector before he completed his collection. Unfortunately because his own minions and attachments end up in the collection and because of his many cards that add cards to the colllection, I found that this was not a good strategy. I shifted to a more control strategy choosing to make the fight last longer and control the collection and this helped secure my Standard win.
On Expert, I found that this task gets even harder as both stages add to the collection in dangerous ways.
To secure my wins, I recommend three pieces of advice.
- Take damage early from the Collector to avoid the extra additions to the collection
- Wait to advance to the final stage until you have the collection completely under control. You really do want to burst down the final stage as quickly as possible because things will get out of control quickly.
- Flip down to alter ego when you have control. This was the most important factor in my wins. You need to keep Gamora's low HP in check. She can very easily be killed if you dont watch her health and defending isnt ideal since you'd prefer to exhaust her to remove cards from the collection(although I'd say often you will be spending resources to remove a card from the collection)
As far as offense goes, I found that Gamora's Sword is a huge help so get it down if you can and Keen Instincts will help you play a lot more events over the course of the game. I found these rarely went to the collection. Nebula is definitely a gamble and I did sometimes play her if I felt the collection was in a good place but she can lose you the game if you bring her out at the wrong time. When possible I would say to keep Crosscounter in hand because the health its going to save you is invaluable. Precision Strike can help here sometimes as well. Flipping down to alter-ego is especially useful with Conditioning Room. Between Gamora's alter-ego ability and this card, you can essentially flip back to Gamora with an 8 card hand ready to go.
This was probably my toughest match up yet but some of that just comes down to luck of the draw. If you're determined and patient, this deck can definitely handle this scenario on Expert. Take your time and don't lose hope. I didn't end up swapping it in but if you find that you're dying too often from ignoring your health, it may be worth swapping out an aggressive energy for a copy of Endurance. Good luck!
