This deck takes advantage of a few things.

  1. Phoenix can generate a wild resource once per phase when she has power counters, and she can do chunks of damage to the villain easily during both phases thanks to the extra resource availability.
  2. Cyclops gives Phoenix 2 extra power counters while in play, and can be kept on the board for a long while with protective training.
  3. Mutant protectors pairs very well with the enter play abilities of Professor X and Polaris, as well as Colossus' natural toughness.

Generally with this deck it is best to look to play your defense events as often as possible, as they are often better than Phoenix's hero events, drawing cards back with defensive energy, getting tough blockers into play to then stay, and chunking down the villain and minions with Powerful Punch and Psychic Misdirection. Play to get Team-Building Exercise, Avengers Mansion, and Cerebro online, controlling the board with your huge thwart stat and your allies' activations, particularly activations from Storm and Cyclops, who are best suited for Protective Training. Use your other allies for blocks when they are needed, play Rise From the Ashes at the end of your first or during your second deck pass, and line yourself up to go Unleashed right around the time you flip the villain to their final stage. White Hot Room helps a lot with this, even if you only use it on one or two flip-downs. Phoenix's events really only need to be played when absolutely necessary prior to going Unleashed, aside from Phoenix Firebird which should almost always be played for an extra counter or two, and don't bother with Phoenix Suit. Once you do go Unleashed, your deck will be somewhat thinned and you'll see your events more frequently, just when you need them. Continue to look for opportunities to play Powerful Punch, use your basic attack activations for three damage, and trust in your ability to rise from the ashes, using all of your allies' activations for attacking (or thwarting if absolutely necessary). Phoenix's kit is best when you play a control style until you are ready to go Unleashed, but with her Restrained thwart stat being large and her allies being quite good at thwarting as well, she doesn't reap as much benefit from justice as she can from protection, particularly protection cards that can deal solid chunks of damage, getting you through minions and the opening stage of the villain, allowing you to line up your timing of going Unleashed with relative ease as you can always spend two power counters in a round, meaning that playing it safe with your counters will never be able to block you from accessing the fullest power of the Phoenix Force when you decide you are ready.
